中國京劇臉譜藝術(shù)是廣大戲曲愛好者的非常喜愛的藝術(shù)門類，在國內(nèi)外流行的范圍相當(dāng)廣泛，已經(jīng)被大家公認(rèn)為是中華民族傳統(tǒng)文化的標(biāo)識。是具有民族特色的一種特殊的化妝方法。由于每個(gè)歷史人物或某一種類型的人物都有一種大概的譜式，就像唱歌、奏樂都要按照樂譜一樣，所以稱為“臉譜”。

京劇臉譜是戲曲臉譜中用色最多的劇種，所謂臉譜色彩是指臉膛的主要色彩而言，有紅、紫、黑、白、藍(lán)、綠、黃、粉紅、褐、赭、金、銀等色，各具秒用，以豐富想象和夸張的手法，突出劇目中復(fù)雜的人物形象，出現(xiàn)于舞臺上。京劇臉譜著重在形、神、意等方面，表現(xiàn)多種人物忠、奸、善、惡寓意褒貶、愛憎分明，而且著色變化有致，勾繪精巧，富有圖案美，具有鮮明的思想性和藝術(shù)性。

紅色的代表忠勇、正直；黑色的代表勇猛、直爽；白色代表奸詐、狠毒、陰險(xiǎn)；油白色代表自負(fù)、跋扈；藍(lán)色的代表剛強(qiáng)、驍勇；綠色的代表頑強(qiáng)、俠義；黃色的代表兇暴、沉著；灰色的代表老年梟雄；紫色的代表智勇剛義、剛正威嚴(yán)；金銀色代表神、佛、鬼怪、精靈。
