(1)兩者都可表示“畫” ：draw主要指用鉛筆、鋼筆、粉筆、炭精等畫圖、畫畫或畫線(側重線條) ；paint 指用顏料繪畫，如水彩畫、油畫等畫畫(側重著色)。如：

He drew a circle (line).他畫了一個圈(一條線)。

He paints in oils ( water-colors).他畫油畫(水彩畫)。

比較： draw a picture 與 paint a picture 含義不同，前者主要指用線條畫成的“圖”，后者則主要指用顏料繪成的“畫”。

(2)兩者都可用于引申義，表示“描寫”、“描述”等。如：

Shakespeare drew his characters very well.莎士比亞擅長人物描寫。

In her letter,she painted a fascinating picture of her life in London.她在信中生動地描述了她在倫敦的生活。

兩者都可表示“發現”，有時可換用( discover 更正式)。如：

He discovered [found] her sitting near the fire.他發現她坐在爐火邊。

She discovered [found] that he was excited.她發現他很激動。

但是，若要表示第一次發現以前沒有人知道的東西、地方、事實等，則用 discover 。如：

Columbus discovered the New World.哥倫布發現了新大陸。

Penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming.盤尼西林是亞歷山大·弗來明發現的。
