Diamond necklaces and rings had been beautifully arranged on a background of black velvet. After gazing at the display for several minutes, Mr. Taylor went back into his shop.

今日文章解讀：

The expensive shops in a famous arcade near Piccadilly were just opening. At this time of the morning, the arcade was almost empty.

皮卡迪利大街附近的一條著名拱廊街道上，幾家高檔商店剛剛開始營業。在早晨的這個時候，拱廊街上幾乎空無一人。

（1）句型分析和仿寫

先將第一句話進行分解，看一個長難句是如何形成的。

The expensive shops / in a famous arcade / near Piccadilly / were just opening.

該句子原本為The shops were just opening.

隨后添加形容詞expensive修飾shops，再而添加介詞短語等，將句子補充的越來越完善，也越來越長。

我們若想寫長句子，你還覺得難嗎？

仿寫：

①那個學生正在讀英語。

The student is reading English.

②那個留學生正在讀英語。

The foreign student is reading English.

③那個留學生正在圖書館讀書。

The foreign student in the library is reading English.

④那個留學生正在臨近麗娃河的圖書館讀書。

The foreign student in the library near Liwa river is reading English.

麗娃河是我們華東師范大學的校河。

如果我們在考試作文中，想要表達一個簡單句，就可以通過以上4個步驟，一步一步添加修飾成分，句子也不會寫錯，句子也寫的足夠長，字數就容易達到要求的標準。當然修飾成分最好與主題有關，不是要你所有的名字都添加修飾哦。

（2）empty表示“空”，以及其他表示“空”的單詞

empty: 指空無一人或一物，或空洞無意義的。

同樣可以表達這個意思的單詞有：

vacant: 普通用詞，側重某物或某個位置沒有被占用。

hollow: 指物體中間是空的。

blank: 指上面沒有寫字、印刷或做記號的空白表面，或指上面留著準備被填寫的空白處。

open: 指未被占有，從而可被別人得到的。

知道這些詞的含義，就不要用錯啦。

比如 empty bottle就是空瓶子，而vacant bottle雖然也指空瓶子，但側重指沒有被占用的空瓶子。
