我學英語的時候喜歡總結近義詞，雖然是難點，但是在辨析各種含義和用法的細微差別的過程中又有無限樂趣。我發現漢語比較傾向用修飾性的詞去描述一個動作或一個名詞，而英語更傾向用專門的詞來表述一個專門的概念。比如“說”這個動作，英語中有很多不同的詞，例如twitter, stutter, splutter等，分別表示“嘰嘰喳喳地說”“結結巴巴地說”以及“語無倫次地說”。

下面就和大家分享一組我非常喜歡、也很容易混淆的近義詞，“閃爍”——sparkle, glitter, gleam, glint, glisten, glow——相信這些詞大家都不陌生，但是用起來會不會有些傻傻分不清呢？

sparkle

If something sparkles, it is clear and bright and shines with a lot of very small points of light.

小編點津：sparkle常用于指物體表面的反光，物體本身閃光也可以。

The sea sparkled in the sunlight.

海面在陽光照射下波光粼粼。

gleam

to shine by reflecting the light – used especially about smooth clean surfaces, or about someone’s eyes or teeth

小編點津：gleam尤指光潔的表面、某人的眼睛或牙齒隱約反光

His teeth gleamed under his moustache.

他的八字須下面，牙齒晶瑩發亮。

glint

if a shiny surface glints, it gives out small flashes of light

小編點津：glint尤指锃亮的金屬閃閃發光

The gold glinted in the sunlight.

金子在陽光下閃閃發光。

glisten

If something glistens, it shines, usually because it is wet or oily.

小編點津：glisten尤指因有水或有油而發光

The boy’s back was glistening with sweat.

那個男孩背上的汗水閃閃發亮。

glow

If something glows, it produces a dull, steady light.

小編點津：（發熱的東西）發出溫暖、柔和、穩定的光，和上面表示閃爍的詞差別較大。

The fireplace was still glowing with the remains of last night’s fire.

壁爐中，隔夜的余燼依然在微微發光。

The red tip of his cigarette was glowing in the dark.

他那紅紅的煙頭在黑暗中幽幽發光。

總結：sparkle和glitter是同義詞，泛指反光；gleam常指光潔的表面、眼睛或牙齒反光；glint常指锃亮的金屬發光；glisten常指因有水或有油而發光；最后，glow常指發熱的東西發出溫暖、柔和、穩定的光。
