Identifying Cars 認汽車

(Driving on the interstate)

（行駛在州際公路上）

Mom: Did you know Daddy wants to buy a new car?

媽媽：你知道爸爸想買輛新車嗎？

Our little sedan is getting old and worn out.

我們的小轎車太老、太破了。

Child: Awww ... but I like this car.

寶寶：噢……但是我喜歡這輛車。

Mom: Well, we wont like it if it doesnt go,

媽媽：嗯，要是它動不了了，咱們就不喜歡它了，

so its time to upgrade!

所以該升級了！

Child: Well, what are we getting?

寶寶：嗯，咱們要買什么樣的呢？

Mom: Hes looking at crossovers.

媽媽：他在看跨界車。

They are a nice size with some extra storage space.

它們大小適中，還有額外的置物空間。

Child: Whats a crossover?

寶寶：跨界車是什么？

Mom: Its like a small SUV.

媽媽：它就像小型SUV。

It is still a sport utility vehicle,

它還是運動型多功能車，

but it has a smaller frame.

但是它的框架更小。

Sometimes they are boxy

有的方方正正的，

and others have more of a sedan shape,

有的和轎車外形更像，

but are still bigger than the sedan.

但還是比轎車大。

Lets make a list of different cars you can find:

咱們列個單子，看看你能找到哪些不同的汽車：

sedan, SUV, crossover.

轎車、SUV、跨界車。

By the way, a sedan is a two or four door car with full rear seats.

另外，轎車是有后座的雙門或四門車。

Rear讀作 [ri?]。

Its the most commonly used car for daily transportation and usually cheaper.

它是最常用于日常交通的汽車，通常比較便宜。

An SUV is a sport utility vehicle

SUV是運動型多功能車，

and you can spot it

你能認出它，

because it sits higher, is taller than a sedan,

因為它底盤較高，比轎車高，

and can sometimes have three rows of seats.

有時會有三排座位。

It has plenty of extra space.

它有充足的額外空間。

The roof extends all the way to the back of the vehicle,

車頂一直延伸到汽車的后部，

which is also true for the station wagon and the crossover.

旅行車和跨界車也是這樣的。

I had a station wagon in my college days.

我上大學的時候有一輛旅行車。

Its a lot like the sedan except that the roof extends all the way to the back of the car.

它很像轎車，除了車頂一直延伸到汽車后部這點不一樣。

Lets see ... that car speeding by is an SUV.

咱們看看……超過去那輛車是SUV。

Child: Whats this one? (points to the sports car)

寶寶：這輛呢？（指著一輛跑車）

Mom: A sport car.

媽媽：是跑車。

A sports car is a two-seat car with less frills and little trunk space

跑車有兩個座位，零碎兒較少，后備箱空間小。

with more than average power in the engine,

發動機動力水平高于平均值，

and is less comfortable, and lighter weight overall.

不那么舒適，總重量較輕。

That ones a Mazda Miata.

那輛是馬自達米亞達。

See how the roof is fabric.

看，車頂是布的。

Its also a convertible -- the roof can come off.

它還是敞篷車——車頂可以打開。

Its great to drive on pleasant sunny days.

在晴朗的日子駕駛它是很愉悅的事。

Child: Thats the one I want!

寶寶：這是我想要的車！

I would go so fast.

我會開得很快。

Thats definitely not a sports car behind the Mazda.

馬自達后面那輛肯定不是跑車。

Thats a van, I know that.

那是輛面包車，我知道。

Its for moving lots of people or stuff.

它用來運輸較多人或貨物。

Mom: Yes, it has 7 to 8 seats

媽媽：嗯，它有7到8個座位，

and sliding doors in the back.

后邊有滑動門。

A minivan is just a smaller van

廂式旅行車就是較小的面包車，

Minivan是一種美國的汽車分類類型，GL8等車型在國內被稱為商務車或MPV。

and is popular with large families.

比較受大家庭的歡迎。

Child: Well, what does Grandpa use?

寶寶：嗯，爺爺開的什么？

Mom: He has a pickup truck.

媽媽：他有一輛皮卡。

It has a closed cab and an open cargo area called the bed,

它有封閉駕駛室，還有開放的載貨區叫貨箱，

which has a tailgate.

帶有后擋板。

Child: Whoa, look at that tiny car!

寶寶：哇，看那輛小車！

What are those called?

它叫什么車呢？

Mom: Thats a microcar.

媽媽：那是微型車。

Its a very small car made for 1 or 2 people.

它是很小的車，只能乘坐1到2人。

That ones a Smart Car.

那輛是Smart。

There is also a compact car,

還有緊湊型車，

but that is more like a small sedan.

但是它就像小轎車。

More basic and cheaper than the sedan,

比轎車更基礎、更便宜，

but definitely bigger than a microcar.

但是肯定比微型車大。

Take a look at that one.

看一下那輛。

Its a hatchback, which means that the back opens upwards.

它是掀背車，意思是后備箱蓋可以向上打開。

英文里沒有兩廂車和三廂車的概念，而是用車型表達，比如hatchback就是一種典型的兩廂車。
